Wildlands Studies offers the unique opportunity for undergraduates to join research teams in the field for academic studies. We welcome a diverse student body and seek to build teams with diversity across experience, disciplines, and background. Our teams are small in size, usually no more than 9-16 students working with our project faculty. Small teams, we believe, are best suited for sharing energies, responsibilities and discoveries. Typically, team members come from diverse USA and Canadian universities, with a nice variety of student grade levels, and bring with them a variety of college and career interests, a mix which usually provides ample substance for backcountry learning and new networks of friendship. Our main office staff works closely with students to ensure that a project will be a good fit with their career and academic goals. We encourage advisors and students to contact us if you have questions.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis once a project is posted on our website, usually a year to eighteen months in advance of the project dates. Acceptance to a project will be made on a space available basis until the project is full. Although we do not have firm application deadlines, often a student's home campus will. Please remind students, if they are going through the study abroad office, of any school-specific deadlines. We encourage students to apply early to ensure acceptance to their preferred project. Application packages must be complete before we will begin review.
A Wildlands Studies course is likely to be very different from both traditional academic courses and those in typical study abroad programs because our projects are entirely field-based. Some projects may entail strenuous hiking and backpacking, and during most projects students live in tents or rustic accommodations for the duration of the course. Please be sure that students read individual course descriptions before they apply to a given program to be sure that it best fits their interests and academic goals.
